South Sumatra to renovate tourist attractions for Asian Games

Palembang, S Sumatra (Antaranews Sumsel) - The South Sumatra provincial government will renovate several tourist attractions prior to the implementation of the 2018 Asian Games in which thousands of athletes from 45 countries will participate.

The athletes are expected to have opportunities to visit several tourist destinations in South Sumatra, Akhmad Najib, spokesman of the South Sumatra provincial administration, noted here, Thursday.

Palembang and Jakarta will co-host the 18th Asian Games to be held from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

The local government will use the Asian Games event to promote tourism in South Sumatra, in general, and in Palembang, in particular.

Tourist attractions in Palembang include the Ampera Bridge, which is the city`s icon; Musi River; Kemaro Island; Al Munawar old kampong; and Kuto Besak fortress.

The Palembang municipal administration has set a target of attracting one million tourists in 2017 and 2.5 million in 2018 to coincide with the Asian Games. Some two million tourists had visited South Sumatra Province this year, and most of them also visited Palembang.

The city has planned to hold various international sports and tourism events prior to the Asian Games.
