Food and drug control in south Sumatra must be tightened

Palembang (ANTARA Sumsel) - Food and drug control in South Sumatra Province should be tightened to prevent dire impacts on the local community, spokesman of the local government Nasrun Umar remarked here on Tuesday.
He noted that consuming expired drugs and foods can harm public health.
In addition, he said nowadays, several food products contain hazardous substances, such as formaldehyde, and when consumed can be harmful to health.
Hence, Umar has urged the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) to conduct strict and routine supervision of food items and drugs circulating in the province that will host the 2018 Asian Games.
Umar said he has raised awareness on the president`s instruction on the supervision of drugs and food items.
He said the familiarization was conducted in collaboration with the local BPOM, with the aim of routinely conducting stringent supervision, as the impact is quite dangerous.
Moreover, the problems encountered in the supervision of food and drugs are very complex due to rampant cases of drug abuse.
In fact, of late, the menace of drug abuse has become a cause of major concern and has clearly threatened the future of the nation`s next generation.
To this end, his party welcomes this cross-sectoral agreement initiated by the BPOM.
