Palangka Raya, C Kalimantan, Nov 3 (ANTARA Sumsel) - As many as 69 observers and experts from nine countries are visiting Central Kalimantan to attend an international peatland roundtable and study the management of peatland areas in the province.

They will visit a peatland management pilot project being managed by the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) and the Center for International Cooperation in Sustainable Management of Tropical Peatland (CIMTROP), Dr Ici Piter Kulu, head of CIMPTROP of the University of Palangkaraya, noted in a statement, here, Friday.

"This event is extraordinary and is expected to usher in good news for the management of peatland areas in Indonesia and the world," he noted while speaking at the First International Peatlands Roundtable being organized here.

 The 69 guests comprising scientists, researchers, representatives of funding agencies, non-governmental organizations, academicians, and decision makers are from Japan, Germany, Finland, Mexico, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, and Indonesia.

During their stay in Central Kalimantan, the guests will visit five locations: the CIMPTROP base camp, bulkhead channel project, and well drilling project in the Taruna Jaya Village, Pulang Pisau District.

During the roundtable discussion, they will discuss the best technology to be applied for the restoration of peatland areas.

"There is not just a declaration but also a concrete effort to save the peatland ecosystem," Nazir Foead, BRG chairman, said.
