Jakarta (Antaranews) - Indonesia will soon set up a representative office of Bank Indonesia (BI), the central bank, in Beijing, China.

An agreement to establish BI`s representative office in Beijing was jointly signed by BI Governor Agus Martowardojo and Central Bank of China Governor Zhou Xiaochuan.

In a written statement received here on Friday, Martowardojo remarked that the agreement is an important follow-up to the bilateral cooperation between the two central banks.

The agreement is also in line with the growing importance of China`s role in the global and regional economies, including Indonesia.

"The presence of BI`s representative office in Beijing is expected to further optimize the economic and financial relations between the two countries and improve understanding of China`s economic and financial developments and policies as well as its implications for Indonesia," the BI governor explained.

Martowardojo pointed out that the establishment of BI`s representative office in Beijing will further strengthen the sound cooperation between BI and the Central Bank of China, or the People`s Bank of China.

"The BI representative office will also play an important role as a key point of contact with the People`s Bank of China, other Chinese government agencies, and financial market players in China," he noted.

According to Martowardojo, BI`s representative office in Beijing is the fifth overseas representative office established by BI apart from those currently in Tokyo, Japan; Singapore; London, England; and New York.
