Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA Sumsel) - South Sumatra will be hosting Asia Pacific Bonn Challenge, which is a global effort to restore 150 million hectares of the world`s deforested and degraded land by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030, on February 2017.
South Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin here on Thursday said the province is ready to host the international event as it has many experiences in organizing several international conservation programs.
He explained that the 2020 target was launched at a high-level event in Bonn in 2011 and was later endorsed and extended to 2030 by the New York Declaration on Forests of the 2014 UN Climate Summit.
Two years in a row South Sumatra has been invited to Bonn regarding evironment conservation, and to Panama because the province has initiated seven restorations in several locations.
South Sumatra, according to the governor, has been a world role model for its restoration and environment protection programs.
The province`s programs gain a lot of supports from Norway, Britain and the Netherlands, Alex noted.
South Sumatra conducted its first eco-region preservation program on August 2014 through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the governor and the management of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+).
